Cafe Oscar HistoryNestor Mayta was sixteen years old when his life changed radically. He left the heights of the high Andean plains (the altiplano) and moved to a completely different landscape. His grandfather had decided to look for another direction. He brought his whole family with him to the Yungas of La Paz, and they started new in Colonia Magallanes. The land they found there was lush with vegetation, the heat unbearable. Don Donato, Nestors grandfather, dreamed of producing coffee, and thats what he did. His family continued the tradition. For Nestor, now 45, producing quality coffee represents a continuation of that dream, and therefore he works hard to manage every step of this process. When I was a child, my grandparents produced coffee. I intended to do the same. I had it in my heart to produce coffee, just like my father. Im following in their footsteps and I like to cultivate coffee. Last year, Nestor participated in the Cup of Excellence, but failed to qualify in the international jury. Nevertheless, he never gave up hope, continued to manage his coffee as well as he could and this year he presented his sample with better results. With what he earns in the international auction, he plans to plant another hectare of coffee and help his parents, who returned to the altiplano.
