El Guachipilin Farm is located in the community Gangual, Municipality of San Juan, Department of Intibucá in the Honduras western
I began growing coffee 25 years ago, I was having a hard time because did not have money for my children studies, in that time I cultivated corn, beans and other vegetables but it was not enough to support my family, wanted migrate to United States of America. I decided stay in Honduras and take risk, sold a swine to buy a small farm of a quarter of hectare and planted the first one thousand plants of coffee. My family is integrated for my wife and three sons. My three sons work with me in all the activities of the farm maintenance, also I hire four persons for this activities. During the picking season 40 to 50 persons are contracted.
What is the secret for winning this competition (describe the preparation process of the competing lot)?
First, my farm altitude and climate conditions. Then the picking process, just red cherries, taking off the no matures cherries, then the milling is making the same day and I have special care selecting the good grain discarding the damaged ones. The dried is made in solar driers.
I am very excited and feel blessing to win COE because it permits me support my family and the families that work with me. Is a good benefit for small producer as they receive best prices for their coffees that can use to invest in their farms. I have participated three times, and won twice.
