Finca El Espejo is located on a stunning landscape in Los Andes, Sta Barbara. Here you will find a rich diversity of tree species, clean and pure spring water, blackberry bushes, and much more. However, if you want to appreciate all of this beauty there is a difficult hour of walking ahead for you!
No road can be built to the farm because it is located so close the to the border of the Sta Barbara National Park. Producers have to walk on a trail once or twice daily to get to the farm and coffee, as well as fertilizers and other materials have to be transported by mule.
Right now Fredy Leonel Castellanos is the capitan of El Espejo, but the source of his inspiration is his father Don Porfirio Castellanos who, at the age of 70, is still working alongside his son.
Together, Fredy and Don Porfirio have been working in coffee for around 10 years, selling it as commercial grade to a middle man in the Las Vegas municipality of Sta Barbara. Four years ago Fredy’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and fell ill. Motivated by The success of the Moreno Family, the pair prepared a lot as specialty and offered it to a recognized company in Peña Blanca which immediately found Coava Coffee Roasters in Portland Oregon. Coava fell in love with the coffee and bought the entire crop. This money allowed Fredy and Don Porfirio to pay for Ms. Aurelia’s treatment until she couldn’t fight anymore. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2011.
The good news is that this amazing team is still improving their quality, this is their first year participating in COE and ...BOOM they won 4th place!
