El Cedral its a small town, with a nice weather, located in a specialty coffee region of Los Andes, next to Mount Maroncho, within the buffer zone of the National Park of Santa Barbara Mountain. This is the home of Don Pedro Moreno who is known as one of the very first coffee farmers in the area. He has been in the business since 1948 - 67 years ago. He is not only a special producer, he is also a special person.
He is an inspiration to his family most of whom are dedicated to coffee production, and many who are also participants in COE.
Some of his sons and brothers work with him. Their main source of income is the export of coffee and the local sale of vegetables such as carrots, beets, cabbages and red beans.
We asked Don Pedro: What is the secret to producing high quality coffee?
He said: First, my farm altitude and climate conditions. Then the picking process, “just red cherries”, taking off the immature cherries. Then the milling is done the same day and I take special care selecting the quality parchment and discarding what has been damaged. The drying is done in solar driers until the coffee has exactly 12% moisture content.
Don Pedro has been participating in COE for 8 years, and has qualified for the auction 5 times.
