We purchased the land in 1964, but this Finca was unproductive and had no infrastructure for coffee processing. Once we had it in our hands, we began to renovate the old coffee trees, to improve the soil, and to diversify the agroforestry. In 1969, my wife, Antonia Olguín Carrasco, was involved into the farm labor; she and my kids were in charge of the nursery, renewal, composting, and harvesting the coffee. My sons Alvaro and Emilio were studying and at the same time they helped with all the work that has to be done in the field. Nowadays my son Emilio is in charge of the coffee production. The infrastructure set up (access roads, beneficio, warehouse, rain water collect and filter systems) has been progressive and sometimes very slow due to economic difficulties. But we have now the opportunity to make all the activities in a sustainable way, we recycle all the by-products for improving and protecting the environment. Since 2003, we are focused in producing specialty coffee, and we have obtained several acknowledgements that sustain this and our quality. La Herradura Finca is also a ranch-school and we train growers since 1999. FB fan page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cafetal-Sustentable-La-Herradura/786854498000619?fref=ts
Our coffee obtained a 90.44 score that is the same of 2013, when we won the first place in the contest. For us this means CONSISTENCY and permanece and this is very satisfying for me.
