History of the farm
Fazenda Santo Antônio was acquired around 1977 by the Santana family, which has been producing coffee since then. In 2001 came to be solely owned by Raimundo Dimas Santana, a member of the Santana family, who was responsible for running it until 2015 when he passed it on to his son, Raimundo Dimas Santana Filho, the current manager. Since then, the entire infrastructure has been modified and adapted with the goal of producing high-quality coffee as the climate, relief and elevation of the region are very favorable. The farm works with socio-environmental responsibility, sustainability and supports the development of all its collaborators who participate every day of the year in the search for the best processes to supply the market with the best product from its fields. In the farm’s first year, 2001, by focusing on coffee quality, the farm produced the best coffee in the state of Minas Gerais for espresso and the second best in Brazil (Illycafè), becoming one more of the many references that have arisen in the city of Araponga since then. In 2017 came first place; the best coffee for espresso in Brazil was produced on the farm, confirming and crowning the farm’s incessant search for quality in its beans and processes. Currently the farm relies on a permanent workforce of 10 workers, 7 of whom live on the property and 3 in the city in their own homes. Fazenda Santo Antônio guarantees workers all benefits prescribed in labor legislation, such as a health program and workers’ compensation. Those workers who live on the farm also benefit from provided housing and basic food basket.
Coffee processing system
For this Yellow Bourbon lot, immediately after passing through the pulper, the beans were placed on African beds where they received differentiated treatment given the potential of the varietal. The drying process was carefully conducted to achieve better quality than the farm’s usual processes. When the lot reached 12% humidity, it was cupped. Its potential proven, the coffee was stored in a big bag, resting in the farm’s warehouse. Finally it was taken to the general warehouse, which prepared the sample, confirmed the quality and send the sample to the competition.
Concern about quality
The concern for quality unites with the farm’s objective to stand out among Brazilian and international producers and ensure the sustainability of its infrastructure faced with prices below that of commodity coffee. In addition, the characteristics of the region, such as the relief and elevation, climate and infrastructure, support the production of quality, helping the farm’s workers in their search for better quality year after year.
