Los Ocotillos farm is located in Pozo Negro community in the municipality of Masaguara, Department of Intibuca. It has an altitude of 1740 meters above sea level.
What is your farm’s history? Is your farm a family unit? How long has it belonged to your family? How many members make up your family?
My parents were dedicated to the coffee growing business, when I got married, I inherited 1.4 hectares of coffee land and together with my spouse we began to first grow 0.7 hectares and eventually acquired more land and I also planted coffee in it. My two sons live in the USA, they help me to improve the farm and our house. Our coffee we’ve always sold it to intermediaries in the area and it was until this year due to a neighbor’s experience I became interested in improving the coffee we grow and participate in Cup of excellence and was able to move on to the international stage.
How many persons work in your farm, family members, permanent employees and temporary employees?
I work personally in my farm and eventually I hire 4 – 6 persons for weeding, fertilizing or carrying the harvest. For harvest I hire 15 – 20 pickers locally.
What natural resources conservation practices do you follow in the farm?
I only do manual cleaning, and use the pulp as compost fertilizer.
What is the shade percentage and the varieties found in your farm?
I have few shade because the altitude.
What type of fertilization process and rust control do you use in your farm?
I didn’t fertilize in the pass but two years ago the IHCAFE technicians recommended me to make the fertilization at least twice a year to have a good yield.
Are you part of an association or cooperative?
No, I am a single producer.
What is the secret for winning this competition (describe the preparation process of the competing lot)?
Just harvest the ripe beans, and our washing process in a brick tank.
How does it feel to be a winner of the Cup of Excellence?
It is great to be able to assist the farm and keep harvesting quality coffee and improve my family’s way of life.
Who prepares your coffee for exportation? (Explain how you sell it and to whom)?
I useally sell only to intermediaries (middlemen).
What is your opinion of the Cup of Excellence?
Good, because it is a way to improve your process.
What has been your experience in the Cup of Excellence?
First year competing.
