Farmer’s Biography:
I was born in the municipality of Fusagasugá, Cundinamarca, in 1969. I’m the descendant of coffee-growing grandparents and parents from the municipalities of Venecia and Pandi, Cundinamarca, where my parents told me they had a farm where coffee was grown, but on a smaller scale.
At the age of 7, my parents bought a farm in the municipality of Guadalupe, Huila, which became our home. My father taught us coffee growing, which little by little he was performing until this crop became the livelihood of my family, made up of my father, my mother and eight siblings.
On this farm I lived the best years of my childhood and I learned everything about coffee growing. I remember that the Colombia n Coffee Growers Federation always provided continued support to growers; since then I learned to love this wonderful crop.
At 15 years of age, having completed primary school, I moved to Bogotá, where I studied and worked aiming at some day having my own coffee farm. At 23 I fortunately met the woman who now is my wife; she came from a very coffee-growing region in Colombia : the municipality of Pitalito, Huila. Since then I started saving money to be able to have my coffee farm; it was there that, with the help of my wife’s entire family: father-in-law, mother-in-law, siblings in-law and godparents I got my first two hectares, which were named El Mirador, located at an altitude of 1800 masl in the Kennedy rural district (“vereda”), a region with lots of vegetation and natural resources such as streams, mountains, flora and fauna. With a lot of effort and dedication, we started planting our first coffee trees. Advised by the family, we decided to grow the Caturra and Castillo varieties, always with the purpose of producing excellent-quality coffee; thank God we have now achieved it and I know that, with the help of our family and the Colombia n Coffee Growers Federation (which has always been supporting us) we are going to keep producing one of the best coffees in the world.
At this time my family is made up of my wife, two children, Sebastián and Sharon, and a godson, Camilo, who even as teenagers and students know everything about the coffee process and it is a pride to realize that they know how to differentiate a good cup of coffee.
