Buku Sayisa PLC was established by Desta Edema, Tamirat Edema, and Wandafrash Abebe in 2018 in West Guji, Hanbela woreda, Buku Sayisa village, Oromia. “I learned everything I know about coffee farming from my father and four older brothers. I joined the business at the age of 21,” said Desta Edema, the 31-year-old farm manager.
The PLC currently has 60 hectares of young coffee land, with current production on 3 hectares producing 5,000 kilograms of varieties 74110 and 74112. The company focuses on quality rather than quantity. “The majority of our land is covered with young coffee trees and in a year or so, we will be able to produce more,” Desta said. The PLC exports coffee in its name and is certified by the Africa Fine Coffee Association, which helped build their profile for a sustainable market. “We have a market, but we still need a better price,” he said.
Buku scored 88.43 points at the Cup of Excellence Ethiopia competition. “I don’t have enough understanding of an online auction to comment on it. However, I feel that this will bring us a better price, and will make our coffee known around the world,” Desta said.
