Overview
El Carmen farm is blessed to be embedded at Potrero Grande Arriba almost reaching the top of the Santa Ana Volcano, well known for its perfect microclimate and great soil for exceptional-coffee growing. This farm´s average altitude is of 1,400 meters above sea level and volcanic clay loam provides the land with the conditions for gourmet coffee harvesting. Juan Duch is a third generation coffee producer, his family has been in the coffee growing business since 1944. El Carmen has been part of the Duch family since 1970, and it shows. The pride on his face while he is showing the farm and explaining his tradition is well reflected in this Cup of Excellence result. He put a special care in selecting the lot that was going to participate this year. The lot was taken from a 1.4 hectare plot and he picked only the best, completely ripe cherries and transported them to the mill on the same day to avoid fermentation risks. A great deal of attention was placed in choosing this coffee. During harvesting a team of 35 people worked this farm earning well above legal wage, as an incentive to make a perfect selection of the coffee. This family´s coffee tradition and practices show in the great deal of success presented by their farms, El Carmen had already ranked 11th place in 2006 with 88.26 points, and now proves again it´s great environmental conditions and potential. With an average of 2,500 coffee trees and 35 shade trees per manzana, it also homes a diversity of fauna such as squirrels, snakes, armadillos, possums, orioles among other native birds. This year, the Duch family farms ranked 3rd with Finca Fatima, 7th with La Nueva, and 11th place with El Carmen.
