Tucked away in the highlands of southwestern China, Yunnan Province offers a landscape rich in natural beauty, diverse traditions, and distinctive flavors. Among its lesser-known treasures is Yunnan specialty coffee—an origin gaining quiet recognition in the global coffee community.

Coffee was first introduced to Yunnan in the late 19th century, but it’s only in recent decades that the region has begun to develop a clear identity in specialty coffee. With favorable growing conditions, dedicated producers, and a focus on quality, Yunnan is steadily emerging as a noteworthy origin.

Situated between 21° and 29° north latitude, Yunnan’s high-altitude plateaus combined with volcanic soil and a mild subtropical climate, create strong conditions for cultivating specialty-grade coffee. Today, the province accounts for over 98% of China’s total coffee production and plays a key role in the country’s growing presence in the international coffee scene.

Central to this progress is our ICP, the Specialty Coffee Society of Yunnan (云南省精品咖啡学会). Founded in 2009, this non-profit organization supports the development of Yunnan’s coffee sector by bringing together growers, processors, exporters, researchers, and enthusiasts. Its mission is to improve quality, encourage innovation, and promote sustainable practices—sharing Yunnan’s coffee story with a wider audience.
