My son Kevin and I have been producing coffee for six years in Colombia. I’ve been involved in the coffee industry though since the late 80’s when I started my own business selling coffee from an espresso cart I built. That small venture evolved into a large espresso bar where we roasted our own coffee. I sold my business after visiting Colombia having fallen in love with the country and moved here. I decided to come full circle from barista to coffee producer by growing exotic coffees in Colombia.
It’s hard work producing coffee, and more so specialty coffee, but it gives us great joy being able to share a great cup of coffee with others. It’s also been rewarding making many friends along the way who are involved in the coffee industry.
We wanted to do well enough in the contest to continue our dream of growing specialty coffee, completing our building project in Marsella and have an impact in the communities where we have our two farms, the other one being in Santuario. We want to buy and process coffee cherry from other producers, have a community dry mill and provide coffee education and tourism. Doing well in a competition such as the COE would help us achieve these goals.
