Overview
The Cafetin de San Martin micro mill is located in the Tarrazu Region of Costa Rica in the small village of San Martin de Leon Cortes, found at the end of a steep mountain road and is not on any official maps. The micro mill was built in 2004 as a social project started by myself, Timothy OBrien, a former Peace Corps volunteer in San Martin (1994-1996), to help 35 friends and small coffee producers in a forgotten corner of the mountains earn better prices for their crop. As fate would have it the farms in our town, some reaching 1950 meters, though lower in production, produced coffees of exceptional quality. The Cafetin farm is the farm surrounding our small micro mill at 1750 meters and is Caturra with a few old Bourbón trees mixed in. We process our coffees using an ecologically friendly PENAGOS pulping machine that mechanically washed the beans thus eliminating the fermentation process. All liquid wastes are processed in a bio-gas digester that produces methane for cooking. All our coffees are then 100% sun dried on raised African beds. Cafetins entire mission has been focused on generating better coffee and better incomes for the producers and their families and put the village of San Martin on the map.
