Overview
Located in the city of Sao Sebastiao da Grama SP, region known as Vale da Grama, Recreio Farm shows excellent characteristics for the coffee production of quality. Fertile soils, mild climate, altitude varying from 3444 to 4265 feet and good exposure under the sun make the perfect environment for the development of coffee crops. It belongs to the family since 1890, and this year it harvested the 115th crop. The farm belonged to Mr. Joaquim Jose de Carvalho Dias, the winner of the Cup of Excellence 2004, and nowadays, the owners are Mr. Homero Teixeira de Macedo and Mrs. Maria Dias Teixeira de Macedo. The agronomist Mr. Diogo Dias Teixeira de Macedo, who is a son of the owners and the fifth generation of the family, does the management. He has been working in the production of special coffee since 2000. Due to the topography of the region, the harvest is done by hand and, for that, the farm has 68 houses with all the necessary structure for the comfort of the workers. It promotes the sports and the culture, with a soccer field, a church, a health center and a computing classroom for the workers children. There are 75 fixed employees and 60 temporary workers that are hired for the coffee harvest. The owners concern on the environment is visible. The farm has a wide area of environmental interest, with a native wood and beautiful flora and fauna. Regarding to this, a program of revitalizing of many native rivers and its margins is being conducted. The employees and their families are having classes on the environment preservation and the conceptions about sustainability. Processing system of the coffee beans The harvest is done by hand, over the cloth, and it starts in May, when the fruit shows a good maturation and a small percentage of green berries. The drying process is in a wet process, performing the pulped natural, in which the ripe fruit are separated from the others and pulped mechanically. The harvested coffee is washed, separated, pulped and spread on the same day on patio, where it remains until it reaches an average humidity of 20%. Then, it can go to the dryer. In the dryer, the coffee rests until it gets 11% of humidity. Then, it is taken to the storehouses to rest and to make the drying homogenous. The coffee beans remains there for at least 30 days and then they go to the processing. Every coffee produced on the Recreio Farm is tracked, from the harvest to the loading and storage in the warehouses. This work guarantees the quality and the origin of the coffee produced. Then they are named as Recreio Estate Coffee. Concern on the quality The quality is the main focus of the farm, and for this, it is given courses about the crop management, the application of pesticides, the post-harvest processing and the cleaning of the tools and machinery, always trying to avoid the exposure of the recent harvested coffee beans to any source of contamination. The production of special coffee by the Recreio Farm is already known abroad: it is the winner of the Cup of Excellence 2004, twice winner of the Contest of Coffee Quality of the state of Sao Paulo (2005 and 2008) and finalist in many other contests of quality. This demonstrates that the farm worries about maintaining the pattern of quality, always innovating and improving the techniques used in the planting, harvest and post-harvest of the fruit.
