The Gitega Hill’s washing station is located very close to Nyungwe Forest and the traced source of the Nile River. Bernard Uwitije, 32 years old, a native of the area, had been trading non‐washed Ordinary coffee up until 2015, when he realized the potential for fully washed specialty grade coffee for farmers and the community. He equipped the station with a 1500kg Penagos machine coupled with a 3 disks machine, fancy fermentation tanks with tiles, and raised drying beds. These investments, along with strong oversight, has yielded very outstanding high quality for all his 3 years fully washed coffee experience.
Gitega Hills Coffee Lot 002 is Winner of 2018 Cup of Excellence on 24th rank with 87.24 average Score.
The altitude farms supplying to Gitega sit between 1700‐ 1900m and have been consistent with strong yield and higher than average cup scores. That high altitude along with the volcanic soil of the area make Gitega an excellent location for high quality coffee. The processing capacity of the wet mill has been growing over years form 215 tones, 520 tones to 670 tons from 2015, 2016 and 2018 respectively without interfering with the improvement of the quality.
Following the pulping of freshly delivered cherry, the coffee is wet fermented and then the beans are sorted by density using water filled grading channels. The wet parchment is dried under cover for 24 hours before being moved to uncovered drying beds for an average of 15 days. During that period the coffee is continually hand sorted by an army of brightly clothed women, who are meticulous in their removal of defect beans.
Part of the income generated by the station each year after repayment from the Bank loan is used to support our 1650 farmers community to pay health insurance scheme, school fees for their children and sometimes upgrade their homes. We are actually working with Rwanda Trading Company LTD (RTC) as our financing and marketing partner and still have room for other reliable and committed partners to give the real value to our outstanding quality coffee and our beloved farmers.
