Overview
Saul Melaras family consists of 8 members, that are involved in different activities. Women take care of household chores and the men take care of the farming activities. The place were they live is called El Pinal, due to the enourmous existence of pine trees. Pine tree is Honduras National Tree. El Pinal is part of the municipality of San Marcos de Ocotepeque. His farm is located at 1675 MASL, greowing varieties of Pacas and Catuai. The location has abudance of forest land, natural springs that emerge from this land, existence of diversity of animal species. For example the Taltuza (pocket gophers ) a night roedent that makes his home in the coffee farms, evidence of this are the many caves spread throughout the farm. This animals vision is similar to the bats, and he only appears at night. The variety of trees grown for our land protection are the pepeto, avocado, The families income comes definitively from his coffee land. The coffee is washed to insure its safety and dried in a solar dryer, while it´s drying the beans are selected for quality. Very little chemical fertilizer in order to avoid contamination of the water sources. Also the COCAFELOL Cooperative regulates the forest protection, and the farms maintenance activities are directed to the environmental sistem protection and care.
