History of the farm
José Wanderley Viana and his wife, Sandra Márcia Mendonça Viana, are the owners of Sítio Lagoa II. In addition to growing coffee, they work together in the city as accountants. He was born and raised on a farm, where he lived until he was 14, when he moved to the city to study. However, he missed the rural life greatly.
In 1996, he acquired two hectares of land in the Lagoa neighborhood, lured by the place’s spiritual mystique. There he build a house and started small-scale agricultural activities. In 1998, they began to plant coffee, now knowing whether the climate and soil were favorable. They fell in love with coffee.
The couple decided to plant 8000 coffee seedlings, of the Red Catuaí and Mundo Novo varieties. As they were at 1300 m.a.s.l., they noted the high quality of the coffees. Thus they decided to expand the fields over the past few years.
Coffee processing system
The harvest is manual. The coffees are dried on a concrete patio and finished in a mechanical dryer which homogenizes the drying, better preseving quality.
Concern about quality
The producers are careful with growing practices, including mixing manure with coffee chaff for fertilizer. They follow other common practices, always being careful not to harm nature in any way. They know that by being friends with nature, it will give them its best.
They rely on the help of their friend Mauro Melo, an agronomist from the city of Santa Rita do Sapucaí, who guides them. The producers are members of Cocarive in Carmo de Minas, which supports them and is responsible for commercializing their coffees through several departments.
