Genesis farm is located in Las Flores community in the municipality of Santa Barbara, Department of Santa Bárbara. It has an altitude of 1550 meters above sea level.
What is your farm’s history? Is your farm a family unit? How long has it belonged to your family? How many members make up your family?
I began growing coffee in the year 2000, first with a 1.5 hectare farm and then I grew 2 hectares more of coffee.
How many persons work in your farm, family members, permanent employees and temporary employees?
My farm’s coffee is harvested and then transferred to a mill in Peña Blanca where it is washed and then solar dried. I hire 3 -4 people to help me in the different activities in the farm. For harvest season I hire 15 pickers locally.
What natural resources conservation practices do you follow in the farm?
Linear design of the farm. Use of natural barriers and shade.
What is the shade percentage and the varieties found in your farm?
Most of my coffee is grown under shade. 20 % of shade with Guama.
What type of fertilization process and rust control do you use in your farm?
I do a chemical fertilization with 12-24-12 plus Urea and two organic fertilization with chicken manure and coffee pulp. Coffee rust is not a problem because Parainema is a resistant variety.
What type of management do you use in your farm (traditional, semi-technical, and technical?) Traditional.
Are you part of an association or cooperative?
No, I am a single producer.
What is the secret for winning this competition (describe the preparation process of the competing lot)?
Keeping the crop in optimal conditions following the recommendations of the IHCAFE technicians. Picking just ripe cherries, making the wet milling in clean and well calibrate machine, the fermentation takes 12 – 15 hours depending the temperature, wash the coffee with clean water and the drying process in solar driers for at least 15 days.

Very optimistic, it’s a way to improve my family’s lifestyle.
